Le styrène est produit en grande quantité À partir de l'éthyl-benzène surchauffé Le styrène autrefois s'extrayait du benjoin Provenant du styrax, arbuste indonésien (QUENEAU, Le Chant du styrène, 1969 ds ROB. 1985).
REM. -styrène, élém. de compos., entrant dans la constr. de termes de chim. V. polystyrène (s.v. poly- II B) et aussi Distyrène, subst. masc. Forme dimère de styrène. La conception de l'auteur explique l'addition du monomère et du dimère (styrène et distyrène) (J. Phys. et Radium, Chim. phys., 1936, p. 398).
